PSA—Regarding Puppies and Flowers RSS Feeds…

On June 3rd I switched the blogging software I had been using from Movable Type to WordPress. Some users have reported that their RSS feeds didn’t update and this is as a result of the switch. If you subscribe by RSS, you will need to update the feed URL by clicking on the icon in the upper right corner of the header banner.

Apologies for not having pointed this out at the time. In the next few weeks Puppies and Flowers will have a new look and feel (which will hopefully not affect the RSS feed again).

Any suggestions or leads? Let me know by sending a message to peter(at)puppiesandflowers.com or just leave a note in the comments section of any post.

Thanks,
Peter

The Iconography of Gerd Arntz (1900-1988)

What makes these icons so remarkable is the era in which they were created, in 1928 Otto Neurath invited Gerd Arntz to his museum for society and economics (Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum) where Arntz developed the Isotype, International System of TYpographic Picture Education.

Pieke Bergmans light bulbs

I love these light bulbs by Pieke Bergmans.  Select 'work' then 'light bulbs' to see more images including the fabrication process.

lightBlubs1.jpg

From apartment therapy:

Pieke Bergmans' series of one-of-a-kind crystal LED lamps for Royal Leerdam Crystal and Solid Lighting are what the designer calls "light blubs." And what exactly is a light blub?

"The answer is simple," says the young Dutch designer. "It is a light bulb that has gone way out of line. Infected by the dreaded Design Virus, these Blubs have taken on all kinds of forms and sizes you wouldn't expect from such well behaving and reliable little products."

Bergmans calls her one-of-a-kind light sculptures "unlimited edition," in that that each unique piece is made using an industrial process she developed that can be repeated until the end of time.

Rory Gallagher — Laundromat

As a kid growing up in 1970′s Ireland, Rory Gallagher was the Irish equivalent of Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton. A brilliant live performer, he set  the bar for three piece rock ‘n roll bands globally.

Romanian witches go online

Romanian witches go online

Romanian witches are going online in a bid to win more customers now the country is in the EU.

Witchcraft is a recognised profession in Romania where white witches offer spells, potions and readings of the future.

But witches say the EU has offered a much wider market, and they need to move with the times and embrace modern technology to reach even more people.

One of the country's most famous witches, Witch Rodica, has set up her own web and blog site – http://vrajitoare.blogspot.com – offering everything from a dream interpretation book to tarot card reading.

Rodica calls herself the "incontestable and undisputed leader of the Romanian witches" and claims she can cure impotence, epilepsy and alcoholism.

She said: "I still do spells and potions the traditional way, but the blog keeps me closer to potential clients and can be used to convince the sceptical that witchcraft is real."

The witches are also offering a new range of spells such as love potions for gay men and lucky charms guaranteed to win EU grant money.

Space Colony Art from the 1970s

Nasa1.jpg

Cylindrical Colonies (Interior view)

Bernal Spheres (Colony construction crew at work)

A couple of space colony summer studies were conducted at NASA Ames in the 1970s. Colonies housing about 10,000 people were designed. A number of artistic renderings of the concepts were made. These have been converted to jpegs and are available as thumbnails, quarter page, full screen and publication quality images.

The WSJ is reporting that Steve Jobs had a liver transplant.

Apple boss Steve Jobs received a liver transplant about two months ago and is expected to return to work later this month, a US newspaper has reported.

The Wall Street Journal said the Apple chief executive would be returning to his job on schedule, but may initially work part-time.

Neither Mr Jobs nor a company spokeswoman confirmed the report, the newspaper said.

Mr Jobs ceased his normal management role more than five months ago.

In January, he announced that he was being treated for a “hormone imbalance”, and had been losing weight throughout 2008.

Mr Jobs co-founded Apple in 1976. He left in 1985, before returning in 1997 and becoming full-time chief executive in 2000.

He is seen to have played a crucial role in Apple’s growth.

The company’s share price has recently risen and fallen in step with rumours or news about his health.

He has already survived a pancreatic cancer that was diagnosed in 2004.

The strangely compelling tale of Alice and Kev…

Welcome to the tale of Alice and Kev.

This is an experiment in playing a homeless family in The Sims 3. I created two Sims, moved them in to a place made to look like an abandoned park, removed all of their remaining money, and then attempted to help them survive without taking any job promotions or easy cash routes. It’s based on the old ‘poverty challenge’ idea from The Sims 2, but it turned out to be a lot more interesting with The Sims 3’s living neighborhood features.

aliceKev1

When you create a Sim in The Sims 3, you can give them personality traits that alter their behaviour. Kev is hot-headed, mean-spirited, and inappropriate. He also dislikes children, and he’s insane. He’s basically the worst Dad in the world. He is a horrible human being, but he’s also amusing to watch.

aliceKev2

His daughter Alice is a kind-hearted clumsy loser. With those traits, that Dad, and no money, she’s going to have a hard life.

aliceKev3

She’s managed to break almost everything in the house now, all in a matter of hours. I guess this is her clumsiness and unluckiness making itself known. She does her best to apologise to Zedadias, but his mind appears to be elsewhere.

Start here.

Obama to OK benefits for same-sex partners of federal workers

gayObama

President Obama will sign a memorandum Wednesday granting health care and other benefits to the same-sex partners of federal employees, two senior administration officials said.

The signing will take place in the Oval Office and follows sharp criticism of the president over a Justice Department motion filed last week in support of the Defense of Marriage Act — which opposes same-sex marriage — that used the government’s interest in opposing incestuous marriages to support its position against same-sex marriage.

Gay and lesbian advocates have also faulted the Obama administration for not moving to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that bars officials from asking about a service member’s sexual orientation but also bars the service member from revealing it.

The president rankled gay advocates before his inauguration when he named megachurch pastor the Rev. Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his swearing-in. Warren, in an interview with Belief.net, likened homosexuality to bestiality and incest. He also supported California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in that state.

During the Warren controversy, Obama — who frequently spoke in favor of gay and lesbian rights during the campaign but has said he opposes same-sex marriage — declared himself “a fierce advocate for gay and lesbian Americans.”

Italy seizes $135B of US bonds from two Japanese nationals

USBonds

From International Business Times:

Two Japanese citizens carrying $134 billion worth of U.S. bonds were detained last week by Italy’s financial police at Chiasso (40km from Milan) on the border between Italy and Switzerland, an Italian daily said Wednesday.

According to the report, they include 249 U.S. Treasury bonds each worth $500 million, plus 10 Kennedy bonds and other U.S. government securities worth a billion dollar each.

In order to stop money laundering Italian law sets a ceiling of €10,000 per person for importing or exporting money without declaring it. The penalty for violating the law is 40 per cent of the money seized.

If the certificates were real, the fine alone would amount to US$ 38 billion, five times the estimated cost of rebuilding quake-devastated Abruzzi region. It would help Italy’s eliminate its public deficit.
