A biopic of music legend Ian Dury is heading to the big screen…

Here’s a classic reminder of his brilliance:

From Sky News:

Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll stars Andy Serkis, the actor best-known for playing Gollum in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

He told Sky News he is thrilled with the reception so far.

“The family came and watched the film after it was put together,” Serkis explained.

“And we got a lovely email from Ian’s daughter saying Ian would have loved this, and he would have sat there and laughed, and then coated you all off with great affection.

“So hopefully we’ve done him proud,” he added.

March will mark 10 years since Dury succumbed to cancer, after a brilliant career with The Blockheads, that produced hits like Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and the classic album New Boots And Panties!!.

The movie charts the post-Punk years of the late 1970s as well as flashbacks to Dury’s Polio-addled childhood.

Serkis’ performance has already won him a British Independent Film Award nomination.

Animation for U2′s — Beautiful Day — by Michael Paul Young

In February of 2009 we got a call from Catherine Owens, the long time super creative director for the uber-famous band U2. Catherine came across our work and knew she found the team who could help with U2’s 2009 world tour (titled 360). After a quick stint of meetings in New York, we came back to the Bangkok studio and begin work for the following two months on numerous ideas.

U2 from Michael Paul Young on Vimeo.

The concert opened in Barcelona on June 30, 2009 to a sold out crowd of 90,000 fans. The screen that displayed this work was designed by Willie Williams, Mark Fisher, Chuck Hoberman, and Frederic Opsomer. The screen was composed of 888 individual hexagonal panels that support 500,000 Barco LED pixels. It can transform from seven meters to 22 meters high and move up and down. To sum it up, this is the most massive and badass screen ever and we were mega-amped to have worked on such an intense project.

Song of the Day — ‘The Electrician’ by The Walker Brothers (1978)

About The Walker Brothers (From Wiki):

The Walker Brothers were an American 1960s and 1970s pop group, comprising Scott Engel, John Maus, and Gary Leeds. They had a number of top ten albums and singles in the mid-1960s, including number 1 chart hits “Make It Easy on Yourself” and “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine (Anymore)“.

Formed in 1964, the three unrelated musicians adopted the ‘Walker Brothers’ name as a show business touch – “simply because we liked it”.[1] They provided a unique counterpoint to the British Invasion in that they were a group from the United States that only achieved success in the United Kingdom and Germany, while the popularity of bands such as The Beatles spread to the US.[2]

Thanks Ray C.

UPDATE:
I just watched the documentary “Scott Walker: 30 Century Man“. Brilliant. Please excuse my ignorance, I’d never heard of him.

Captain Beefheart RIP (1941-2010)

From BBC:

American musician and painter Don Van Vliet, best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart, has died aged 69.

Van Vliet’s death in California, from complications from multiple sclerosis, was announced by the Michael Werner Gallery in New York.

Van Vliet was “one of the most original recording artists of his time”, the gallery said in a statement.

He rose to fame in the 1960s with a unique style of blues-inspired rock & roll, later devoting himself to art.

Artists including Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Franz Ferdinand, Oasis, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The White Stripes are among those who have cited him as an influence.

What it’s really like to work in a music store — Hysterical!

From Dangerous Minds:

And there you have it. These videos are mini-masterpieces of comedy. Not only are you laughing at the “musicians” testing out instruments at the store, but when this guy makes his cameo appearance, the look on his face will have you in tears. He doesn’t have to say anything at all and it’s side-splitting. When you make eye-contact, you know what he’s thinking!

Check out the rest of the videos here.
