Amazing pictures of Li Wei whose work is a mixture of performance art and photography

LiWei1.jpg

Chinese artist Li Wei has produced an unsettling series of self-portraits involving his face reflected in mirrors in public places, and photographs of himself crashing into walls and sidewalks.

The slogans are are even better than the art:

“Let's take revenge a thousand times on the US imperialist wolves!”

“Our missile programme is a guarantee for world peace and security.”

'Let's all become perfect swimmers" — this one had me scratching my head a little bit.

On Death and Dying

Suffering from a recent loss I have shamelessly lifted the following post, in it's entirety, from Miss Cellania for your viewing pleasure. Her blog is a daily ingest for me, and as I may be offline for a few days, I recommend checking out her roundups. Please don't sue me RFox.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

No, I’m not obsessed with death. At least, no more than the next person. Honestly, I haven't done any more posts on death than I have any other subject. Worrying about death wastes your time, and time is all you have between right now and death. Still, I’ve been to way too many funerals the last few years. They come in all kinds. Ove the years I’ve reported on many that had brawls, some with police involvement. Remind me to do a post on redneck funerals some day. But today, it’s just plain death and the jokes we make about it to ease our nervousness. Isn't it humam nature to joke about the things that scare us the most? Sex, rejection, and yes, death (just don't joke about it in an airport). After all, death is just part of life, albeit the last part.

As you can see, the risk of death by blogging is quite low. But you are going to die someday of some cause, so here are 5 Things for Bloggers to Do Before Dying. (via Grow-A-Brain)

Have you ever wondered what happens after you die? Thanatorama is a French flash documentary that explains the process. You may select English subtitles. Click on the upper left to navigate the chapters. (via Metafilter)

The National Safety Council has a chart of the odds of dying from various means. For example, the odds of dying in a pedestrian accident are one in 49,000 in a given year. Some have to be taken with a grain of salt, however. Based on statistics, the odds that you will die by intentional self-poisoning are one in 50,000, but if you don’t do that, you don’t have to worry about it. (Thanks, Bill!)

NEW HIRE

(via Phil’s Phun)
Joe gets a job in an undertakers, but he says he's never seen a dead body before.

His boss says, "That’s OK I'll take you around and show you some."

The first body is a man with a smile on his face.

The boss says, "He got 6 numbers on the lottery and had a heart attack, that’s why he has a smile on his face!"

The second body is also a man with a smile on his face.

The boss says, "He was on his honeymoon in bed and had a stroke, that’s why he has a smile on his face!"

The third body is also a man with a smile on his face.

The boss says, "That's Bubba. He was struck by lightning,"

The apprentice interrupts, "Why is he smiling?"

The boss replied, "He thought he was getting his photo taken"

FOURTH MARRIAGE

(via Bits and Pieces)
The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married -- for the fourth time.

The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation.

'He's a funeral director,' she answered.

'Interesting,' the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living.

She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she'd first married a banker when she was in her early 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, later on a preacher when in her 60's, and now in her 80's, a funeral director.

The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.

She smiled and explained, 'I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.'

Famous Last Words: the Animated Musical

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada

"Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada transforms common people into icons by rendering them in charcoal as urban murals. By questioning the controls imposed on public space, the role models that represents us in the public space and the type of events that are guarded by the collective memory he breaks preconceptions of where art is permitted, when art is needed and to whom it is directed. Documentary created by Ana Alvarez-Errecalde and FILMCHICK PRODUCTIONS."

The Lost Land — Eavan Boland

I have two daughters.

They are all I ever wanted from the earth.

Or almost all.

I also wanted one piece of ground:

One city trapped by hills. One urban river.
An island in its element.

So I could say mine. My own.
And mean it.

Now they are grown up and far away
and memory itself
has become an emigrant,
wandering in a place
where love dissembles itself as landscape:

Where the hills
are the colour's of a child's eyes,
where my children are distances, horizons:

At night,
on the edge of sleep,
I can see the shore of Dublin Bay.
Its rocky sweep and its granite pier.

Is this, I say
how they must have seen it,
backing out on the mailboat at twilight,

shadows falling
on everything they had to leave?
And would love forever?
And then

I imagine myself
at the landward rail of that boat
searching for the last sight of a hand.

I see myself
on the underwold side of that water,
the darkness coming in fast, saying
all the names I know for a lost land:

Ireland. Absence. Daughter.

The attack of the Coca-Cola robots

Coca-Cola has oversized robot vending machines lumbering around Tokyo pinching the heads of people who prefer a different brand. These robots have been made to the likeness of the 11inch tall desktop toys which feauture the regular as well as the black Coke Zero available in Japan. The toys feature bendy arms and have a little coin slot for saving up your yen and buying more coke.
