Brinkmann’s Cigarette Cards
These colorful German cigarette cards from the mid 1930’s caught my eye. The background designs reminded me of Shepard Fairey‘s Obey series. All of the cards are from Brinkmann’s Cigarettes Bunte Filmbilder –or Colored Film Pictures– series 1 and 2 which ran in 1935 and 1936. The designs are almost literal representations of the crossover from Art Nouveau to the modern world of moving pictures and ‘talkies’. The people are mostly famous German and European actors/celebrities. Quite interesting the play on words and the juxtaposition of the black and white stills.
